Wow Legion Expansion Details

So, Blizzcon 2015 is underway and I tripped across the Youtube videos yesterday.  See below. They had lots of coverage of the coming Wow Expansion Legions.

Pretty exciting. And they have even leaked the release date of “before” 21 Sept 2016.

There are some other things that you may not have caught up on if, like me, you have been away from Wow for some time.  Here’s a catch-up guide in case you’ve been away:

Someone Please Sit the EU Court Down for a Class in Internet

SlashDot Article
SlashDot Article

Would someone please set the EU down and give them a quick course in how the internet works? In spite of the fact that the internet, or at least the browser, was invented in Europe – At Cern right, by Tim Berners Lee? – the EU just does not get it.

So they think that they can make it a copyright violation to create links among pages without prior permission? Is this a backhanded way to continue the “protectionism” of the media industry in Europe? They have been fighting with Google for a couple of years now about Google News providing links to the media [read news papers] sites. So this sounds like a back handed way to prop up that nonsense.

Here’s the original article, again I’m violating copyright – in the minds of the EU court by doing this.

When will the EU courts get off their high horse long enough to understand the technology and listen to a wider audience ? We all know that when Google stopped linking to the new media sites, their traffic dropped by 40 %, so then they tried to say that Google Must link to their sites, and Must Pay for the privilege. Sounds to me like these media companies are in trouble, don’t want to work for an honest living and so cry to the EU court to have the internet companies are are making it in the new world subsidize the continued existence.

What nonsense. Just my humble opinion. – ww

Smart Remote Control for Sony Cameras

Sony Nex-6
Sony Nex-6

I’ve had my Sony Nex-6 camera for a while now. I got mine in 2014, but the camera has been out since 2012 and it’s probably been superseded by other models. I noticed on one of the news sites I scan that the Smart Remote App for Sony cameras has been updated, so I thought I should try to get it running. To review, this app allows almost full control over the camera from a tablet or smart phone using an application over WiFi. The android app is here.

I should have kept my camera firmware up to date so I had some glitches getting the camera updated to V 1.03 so that I could run the Smart Remote Control. If you have an older Sony Alpha camera, you might want to follow along to avoid running into issues.

MMOs – Why Enjoy Playing Alts?

Some Alts
Some Alts

I enjoy playing Alts in MMOs. I find that leveling the Alts through the same old content provides new challenges if the Alts are of different classes, but also that I can hone the use and efficiency of traversing content the next time through even if the same classes are used. However, recently, over the last several months, some things have happened in Tera that have now reminded me how useful playing the same content over and over can be. One learns to do it better and better. Here is a short chronicle of my experiences in Tera since the Gunner and Fate of Arun expansion were released:

Fate of Arun

Tera at Enmasse released the Fate of Arun expansion in December 2014. This expansion provided a foothold on the as yet unoccupied content of Northern Arun and provided a path to level from 60 to 65. I did not rush into playing this expansion. I had some toons at nearly level 60, but didn’t have any that were ready to take on the new content.

I was struggling in Elenea with toons at level 58 or so that seemed to be under-powered and were not advancing beyond what looked like a strength valley in their ability to level up.

Linux Video Tools

Openshot Video Editor
Openshot Video Editor

Now that I have your attention, I’d like to describe what I have found out recently about capturing, editing and burning DVDs of videos using Linux. I have been editing video and burning DVDs for years on Windows. I started long ago when the tools were barely functional and finding a set of tools that understood a common set of file formats was quite a challenge. The situation on Windows has matured over the years and currently you can purchase for a very small price a set of tools that will allow you to capture, edit and burn both DVDs and BluRay disks with remarkable ease.

The situation on Linux Mint is almost that good. Currently I cannot find software that allows editing and burning the BluRay disk media with titles and menus, but one certainly can edit the videos themselves. Read on for the full story.

Linux Mint – Windows File Sharing Just Works

Samba Built In
Samba Built In

Hurray! Windows File Sharing just works in Linux Mint 17!

It’s been a long time since I tried it.  Back in 2010 when I was using Ubuntu, I wrote a post about how to set up Samba, and WinBind to get network sharing going and was quite disappointed that it wasn’t working. Well, that process was so cumbersome that I haven’t used it much over the years and in spite of the fact that about half of my computers are Linux, I haven’t bothered to set it up, or check to see how things have progressed. But I was sharing files recently and lo and behold, it works just fine!

As you can see from this picture, I am looking into a share from a Linux Mint 17 system into a Windows 10 system and can see and read those files. The Windows 10 system drives are shared read/only, as is the best practice. More about that later. But here is what you can expect if you have a mixed network, and how you can use Windows File sharing between Windows 10 and Linux Mint 17.

Social Gaming – Fostering Friendships in Games?

AK_2015_08_23_13_29_49_874

What makes an MMO game social? It seems to me that there are a few ways to meet friends in games:

  1. Meet them out in the world, and join up with them to accomplish shared goals in the open world.
  2. Meet them waiting for, or matched for, an instance – dungeon or battleground – to accomplish the shared goal of that instance.
  3. Join a Guild, or whatever the game calls a group larger and more permanent than a party, and meet other folks in the guild that share the above goals.
  4. Meet them outside of the game, and come into the game together.

But once you bump into someone in the game, there are aspects of the game that encourage or discourage the formation of longer term Social Interactions in the game.

Google vs the Rest of the World

I just saw yet another story about some country or other deciding to try to Fine Google for some perceived problem or other with their search results:

story_an-inside-look-at-googles-kirkland-campus_image_726x726

Maybe it’s time for Google to have Terms and Conditions… For Countries. I suggest the following:

Quote:

If you want Google to be available within your country’s boundaries – based on IP address and nothing else by the way since we aren’t going to check anything but this – then you as a sovereign country agree to the following:

(1) Google does not support “Right to be forgotten” or any other censorship that you may want. Forget it or forget Google.

(2) Google does not fiddle with it’s search results based on your country preferences. If you don’t like the results, seek help with an SEO expert, or Google will be happy to not be present in your country / jurisdiction.

(3) Google will abide by the terms and conditions that it has published. If you don’t like them, then don’t use Google or don’t have Google in your country.

(4) Google is building and providing the best search engine, and other services, that we can, based on our own conscience and our business plan.

If you don’t like these terms and conditions, use another search engine, or make your own search engine. Up to you.

End Quote:

Seems like it’s time for this. <Disclaimer> I have no financial interest, or any other kind of interest in the success of Google or it’s services, other than I use them, and like some of those services. </Disclaimer>

I’m getting tired of all the whiners out there. Nobody ever whined about Alta Vista when it had 90% of the search market. Get over it, or get Bing – or whatever.

Aura Kingdom – Thumbs Up

Navea City Square
Navea City Square

I give Aura Kingdom a big Thumbs Up. I’ve been playing for a few days now, and AK is a welcome relief from a lousy game like Allods. This is not an in-depth review, but some first interesting impressions that may cause you to seek a more in-depth review, of which there are plenty. One of the best reviews is the one on YouTube by MMO Grinder. But here are some of my thoughts. I may have covered some things that MMO Grinder didn’t talk about.

Low Stress Game to Play
Low Stress Game to Play

First of all, AK is a low stress game to play. You level quite quickly. In an hour or so you’ll be at level 10, if you read all the text of the quests, of which there is a lot, but the story is interesting. If you are an AltaHolic [ addicted to many toons ] then the next times through you can click Skip, but the first time though it’s best to slow down and read the dialog. There is almost no voice acting. So put on your reading glasses and settle back. The story is worth it.
