Recently, Windows 11 has started to Beep at various times. Nobody online seems to really have a handle on what is going on, or how to fix it. But I had a thought that nobody I saw discuss this topic has mentioned. The various sources indicate that it seems to be coming from USB Device Connects / Disconnects and talks about looking at the event managers to see this. I looked and I could not see any events.
There is a control panel to set what sounds play on certain events.

So I had the bright idea of changing the sounds for Connect and Disconnect to see which one was occurring. The sounds I heard did not sound exactly like these, but here’s what I did.
Record Your Own Sounds
I recorded myself speaking the works “Connect” and “Disconnect”. I used the Sound Recorder.

Then I had two problems: Trimming the Sound, and Saving it as a Wav file rather than a M4a file. Don’t we think it’s pretty stupid for Windows 11 sound recorder to not be able to save a file in a format that other parts of Windows Requires? Pretty STUPID IMHO.
Audacity Audio Editor
So, my goto Audio Editor is Audacity. Looks like they have signed up for Privacy Harvesting tho. They now twist your arm to use MuseHub and store your audio in the Cloud. Sigh… But I managed to get around all that to use Audacity locally.

So after installing Audacity, and the FFmpeg library to allow export of WAV files – sigh… Lawyers… I was able to amplify, trim and export wave files that could be chosen with the sound control panel.

I’ve only heard the “Disconnect” sound rather than a beep once so far. But I now know that the sounds I’m hearing are likely some new nonsense or bug that Windows 11 has changed that causes USB devices to disconnect – or they changed things to report disconnects when they are not important.
It will be interesting to leave this in Windows 11 and hear when they fix the “Annoying bug” so I never hear that noise again. Unless I pull a thumb drive of course.
Sigh… Windows 11 is more and more annoying every day. I use Linux Mint whenever I can.
